Seeking Amy or Obscenity and Stupidity

The media is all upset about the new track by Britney Spears, If U Seek Amy because its offencive and pornographic and whatever else pops into their heads. Seriously people, most of the people on the forums online can't even figure out how its obscene so it can't be that bad.

For those of you still scratching their heads, its phonetic, almost. Slowly pronounce "If U See" and you get F-U-C and then the 'K' is well, not phonetic but simply there. In neither writing nor speech does it actually spell out the horrifyingly war-causing, seal-clubbing 'F' word, but its suggestive of it, if you try hard enough.

I dare say, any young person who figures out the connection already knows the word.

For the record, yes, I have a seven year old child and I'm a conservative Christian parent as is my wife. Britney Spears is not on my 'A' list of people to invite to a party, but seriously people, give it a rest.

It's this kind of stuff that drives me crazy and leaves me asking the question; could our society get any more stupid? I mean, you think that people would sooner be in opposition to a song with swearing in it rather that "just" a suggestive title. In my personal suggestion, I barely see how this could even be suggestive.

Think about it. You pull up to an intersection, you got some guy playing rap music at an audio level where everyone within the vicinity of two blocks can hear it saying every swear word in a single sentence you could possibly think of, and people take offence to a mildly suggestive song name which may have been unintentional? We allow offensive, violent and/or pornographic shows on the television, and people are complaining about a song title?

And lets not forget that the rest of the world associates Christianity with Western society. To a foreigner, this would seem like hypocrisy added to the hypocrisy of the actions stated above.

If our culture is going to start complaining about something so ridiculously stupid, they better show some consistency and censor absolutely everything that even hints of obscenity or keep their mouths shut. Quite frankly, I don't think that is the solution. I think a lot of it has to do with the social and cultural standards we set for ourselves.

I would like to believe this a problem of minorities talking like majorities and propagating ultra-ultra-conservative bs, but that's just me being optimistic. People should stop being so sensitive. If you don't like it, don't listen and don't complain.

For the record, I am neither Christian not particularly conservative. I am not offended by swearing or references to sex in songs. I don't have any children myself but I'm helping my girlfriend raise her 11 year old daughter. I fully understand why the media are up in arms. If you had trouble understanding the meaning then you didn't listen to the song. The lyrics go: "All the boys and the girls want to if you seek Amy". This is not a double entendre as it states in the Wikipedia article. A double entendre has two meanings, one innocent and one not so innocent. This has one offensive interpretation and one nonsensical interpretation which spells out the offensive word.

What offends me the most is that Britney is probably too stupid to realize that she's not being clever. She could have cast herself as Amy in the song and then said: If you seek Amy, you will find happiness. That would show a spark of creativity and intelligence. You could also appreciate the song on a more innocent level since it would be logically consistent.

How would you feel if your daughter got in trouble at school for singing this song? How would you feel about having to sit her down and explain that she was really singing about how all the boys and girls want to have sex with her? If this were really a double entendre people could just accept the innocent meaning and leave it at that. Instead you get asked "but I don't even know what she means" and you have to explain it.

My girlfriends daughter swears when she is with her friends but she knows it's not appropriate when adults are around. It's not realistic for me to expect her to not swear, I just want her to understand when it is appropriate. If the song was blatantly offensive she might still sing it, just not at school. This song is intellectually (if you can use that term when referring to a Britney song) dishonest The purpose is to generate controversy and then say "oh, I didn't really say that". Yes, sweetie, you did. You're just not bright enough to understand why your excuse doesn't work.

I understand that Britney wants to generate attention and it is unfortunate that she will succeed. I am hoping that people will realize this is a last ditch attempt to sell herself to the public and will eventually tire of her antics.
